Merry Christmas

December 22, 2000

Christmas gifts and cards. I’ve suddenly got a ton of them on my desk at work. When I first started working here, I had no idea how they did Christmas, so I waited and did nothing. And was inundated with cards, gifts and treats. I felt like a total ass ‘cause I hadn’t even done cards for people. I did a round of Thank You cards, naturally, but still felt bad. Last year, I planned early, and made a bunch of little candles in mini terra cotta pots painted gold. I made enough for everyone I worked with. Then it turned out they weren’t going to do Gifts for Everyone anymore (the firm was growing such that for us poor peons, it gets a little expensive to give everyone a gift), but do a Secret Santa thing instead. Great. What the hell am I going to do with 40 candles? I’ve managed to give away a few for Christmas gifts both last year and this year, and will probably have enough for next year as well. Since we started doing the Secret Santa, I just assumed we weren’t doing Gifts for Everyone. Some of the Head Honchos still give gifts to all, but they don’t participate in the Secret Santa, and they can afford to get gifts for everyone. But, today, I’m getting gifts from people (other than Head Honchos), as well as cards. I know I could’ve at least done cards, but, I just got lazy. I’ll have to plan better for next year: Secret Santa gift exchange, and cards for everyone! Next year, I’ll get it right!

Do you send a Thank You card to someone who only gave you a card? From one of the Head Honchos I just got a card, but the card has an original photograph by a local photographer. So, in that way, it’s kind-of like a gift, too, isn’t it? It’s a lovely picture, and I plan to get a little frame for it, so I guess it really is a gift. Never mind, I just answered my own question.

Last night, I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a few more books and a magazine. I know I shouldn’t, but the Not Buying Anything For A Year resolution doesn’t begin till the first, so I still have time. I kind-of wish I would’ve waited now, as one of the gifts I got today was a B&N gift certificate! Oh, well, I guess I can tolerate getting a couple more books! In case your interested (and since I think I’ll quit Escape, since I just never have the time to deal with it), here’s what I bought: Consumer Reports New Car 2001 Buying Guide, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Body for Life, a fitness diary, and Soy of Cooking. Looks like I’m trying to get into shape and buying a new car, doesn’t it?

Tonight DeeDee, Suzie and I are having our last Girls Night Out of 2000. We’re going out for a little while after work to share some Christmas cheer, catch up on all the gossip, and stuff like that. We haven’t gone out for a while, so it should be fun to see everyone again. Only one more week in 2001. I’ve got the basic outline of my Resolutions, and new (well, recycled) look for my journal, and hopefully, a new attitude. Actually, mine’s pretty bad right now because of something that happened at work (nothing to do with cards and gifts, it was something else, I’m not going to discuss here), but hopefully it’ll get better as the day goes on.

Well, since I never get around to writing over the weekends, and this one is going to be particularly busy, I’ll go ahead and wish you all a Merry Christmas right now. If you are of a faith other than Christian, Happy Whatever Your Faith’s Holiday Is. (I don’t want to leave anybody out, but at the same time, I don’t know all the different holidays that are happening now.) If you are of no faith, then have a great weekend. See you next week.

Cheers!
