self-portrait: a journal of discovery

The Long, Cold January

I swear this has been the longest January on record! I remember when I lived in Washington State - specifically Ellensburg, Cle Elum, and Colfax - that January would go on and on and on. I think it was the cold weather, the snow, the dark, dark, dark, that just seemed to be there forever. It felt like it was only light out a few hours of the day, and the rest of the time it was dark, cloudy, cold. When I moved to California, however, January just flew by, like May or July. I'm certain it's because we have just nice weather here in January (usually). It's lighter longer. The sun shines more often. You can't always see your breath when you're outside.

This year, however, it's been unusually cold. There has been some snowfall in SLO County, though not where I live. We've had frost. I'm certain all our plants will be dying here very shortly. We've had some ice, too, which most Californians aren't use to driving on. Surprisingly, there haven't been too many accidents. There was the one yesterday at the bottom of the Grade, which allowed me to take some pictures, and another further south, which looked really bad on the news (but no one was seriously hurt, thank God), but other than that, it hasn't been bad.

In other news, starting tomorrow, I'm going to be doing a new thing. Instead of using the same ole self-portrait of me and Brandon (above), I'm going to put a different picture up there. Should be easy now that I have a digital camera, but I might even scan some old pictures and use them. Don't get excited, you probably won't be seeing any pictures of me. I'm just too damn ugly. Maybe if I ever get prettied up, then I'll start taking some pix, but until then, no thank you! It's a new camera! I don't want to break it.

Cheers!

ESCAPE

Reading: Mendoza in Hollywood by Kage Baker

Classic Book of the Month: Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Listening to: New Wave Hits of the 80's. I purchased several volumes tonight, along with the new one by Puddle of Mudd. I love their new song, Blurred. It's got an explicit lyrics warning, though, so I'm not sure I'll like the rest of the CD or not. I'm not really a prude, but really foul language in music bugs me. Like the new one by Blink 182. There's just way more cuss words than there needs to be.

Writing: Nothing lately.

Favourite Thing Right Now: Zinc Lozenges with Echinacea and vitamin C. Everyone around me has been sick lately, but I've been sucking these puppies down for the past week, and I feel fine! My immune system rocks!

Gratitude: Superbowl Sunday is this weekend! Yay! I know none of my teams are playing, but it should still be fun. I think I'll go for the Rams. Kurt Warner is a hottie!
