The Best Saturday Ever

This was one of the best Saturdays I've ever had! Mom and I invited my grandparents down to our place for a late afternoon picnic to celebrate my grandmother's 89th birthday.

(A brief aside: I thought today was her birthday, but it turns out that it's actually my father's birthday; my grandmother's birthday is Monday, the 26th. Apparently there has always been a mix-up with that, since both birthdays are so close together. I did the math and discovered that my father would be 68 this year. 68!! It's hard to imagine my dad at 68! He'll always be 45 to me!)

Mom and I spent the whole day running around buying birthday presents (a hummingbird feeder cleaner, which my grandmother really needs, and a box of Lipton teabags and a bag of lemon drops, both of which she loves.) and groceries for the picnic tonight as well as the rest of the week, cleaning the house, preparing picnic food, and setting up the backyard. We decided to use our card table and set it up in the shade of our neighbour's tree, rather than fight with our large, heavy, glass top patio table. We covered the card table with an old (but still nice) tablecloth, and clipped it together underneath with clothespins so it wouldn't blow away in the breeze.

For our picnic dinner we had turkey sandwiches on thick, yummy foccacia bread, a pasta salad with chopped tomatoes, a veggie tray, and Diet Snapple iced tea with lemon. It was sort of a lemony themed day what with the lemon iced tea, the lemon drop candies, and for our dessert we had a lemon pound cake with fat-free cool whip! I swear we didn't plan that!

After dinner, we chatted outside till the sun went down and it cooled off, then we came inside and gave my grandmother her gifts, and chatted some more. I had made the card using a photo I took last year of our Echinacea flower. I tried several different sizes before finding just the right size, and I used a slightly smaller version to make a matching bookmark. Both turned out really great!

I also stamped some flowers and "Happy Birthday" on the plain brown gift bag we put all the gifts in.

All-in-all it was a busy but wonderful day!
