F is for Father's Day

Yeah, it's a pretty obvious one considering Father's Day is this Sunday, but what the heck, F is for Father's Day. Since my own father passed away many, many years ago, the only men I can celebrate Father's Day with now are my grandfather and my uncle. Usually we do the same thing for Father's Day: go to church, then to Sizzler for brunch. This coming Father's Day, I have no idea what we're doing. My grandfather would just like to have a nice quiet picnic at home; my uncle will probably want to go out to eat. We might be celebrating separately this year, I don't know.

I can't remember celebrating Father's Day with my dad. We probably picnicked, BBQed, or did some other outdoorsy sort-of thing, since my dad was the outdoorsy type. But, I can't remember. I can't remember what I bought or made him for a gift, either. I very likely made him something with paper, crayons and glitter. It was probably fugly as sin. He probably loved it anyway. One time I made a golfer candle for him with my mom - my dad loved to golf, as well as hunt, fish, camp, etc., etc. - but I can't recall if that was a Father's Day gift or for his birthday or Christmas, or what.

But, now we just have grandpa - my mom's dad; both her parents are still living. They are the grandparents I speak of here often - and my uncle (one of mom's brothers; the other on is in NY). We only get stuff for my grandfather, though, and just give my uncle a card. (Which reminds me, I need to make Father's Day cards quick like a bunny!) Buying presents for my grandfather is difficult because he already has so much, and there's very little he wants. I hate buying him shirts and cardigans all the time, but periodically he does need those. My grandparents have pretty much every gardening accessory known to man, as well as every possible plant and flower. My grandfather has a computer (an old one I bought from work, then gave to him when I upgraded to this one), a new monitor, a WebTV, dozens of computer games, and more crossword and jigsaw puzzle things than he'll ever be able to use or put together. But, he likes those things, so occasionally we'll buy them. He also likes nuts, Aplets and Cotlets (but, then again, who doesn't?), and flavoured popcorn, but who likes getting only food items for Father's Day? He loves gadgets, too, and we've bought him plenty of those. Most recently, we bought him the Gopher; a gadget that helps pick stuff up so there's no bending over, which my grandfather can't do so well anymore. He loves it. He uses it all the time. The problem with buying him gadgets all the time, thought, is that eventually, there's clutter, and everyone in my family hates clutter. They hate having stuff sitting around that gathers dust, and takes up space.

So. This year, I got my grandfather not only something he can use, but something that won't take up any extra space: a new computer. Yes, he already has one, but this will be a major upgrade! This computer is smaller, so will take up less space, and is more powerful, so he can plan more of his computer games faster. The only problem is (if it is a problem) there's actually nothing on the computer - it's another one I bought at work when we once again upgraded our desktops, and therefore all but the very, very basic stuff has been deleted. However my grandfather and my uncle are both computer geek-types, and the two of them will have a great time, I'm sure, fixing this new machine up.

And, now, just a brief update on the cold: it's still here, though I am improving. I tried going without cold medicine last night and this morning, but by noon, I had to take an Advil Cold & Sinus liquicap. My head, nose, sinuses, everything was so stuffed up, I couldn't stand it anymore. Gah! Other than that, stuff is good!
